The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York

More than 140,000 Erie County residents are at risk of losing critical food and heating support due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Local officials warn that if congressional action isn’t taken by November, SNAP benefits will be suspended, hitting over 78,000 households and stripping $27.5 million from the region’s economy.

Delays in the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) could leave families struggling to afford heat as winter nears.

Officials stress that the cuts will especially impact children and seniors, who make up 70% of those affected.

Community organizations and faith leaders, such as Assistant Pastor Kent Arneth and Reverend Kinzer Pointer, are urging groups to expand food assistance in response.

Residents should seek alternative food and emergency utility resources, while advocacy efforts continue for swift legislative action to restore these essential programs.
